Harvey Goldstein

Professor of Social Statistics

Biography

Harvey Goldstein turned multilevel (hierarchical) models from a statistical curiosity into software-backed practice for education researchers, epidemiologists and survey statisticians. While at the Institute of Education (1977–2005) and later the University of Bristol he co-authored the MLwiN programme and wrote Multilevel Statistical Models for Arnold—then the standard shelf reference for random intercepts and slopes in clustered trials, school effectiveness studies and repeated-measures growth curves. Elected FBA (1996) and awarded the RSS Guy Medal in Silver (1998), he chaired the Society's Official Statistics Section, advised government on school league tables, and continued publishing on assessment fairness until his death in 2020.
