Anatomy and Physiology for Nurses

About this book

A teaching anatomy and physiology text pitched at the student-nurse level, written as a companion to Sears' Medicine for Nurses. Structured around systems, with diagrams tuned to the clinical questions nurses are expected to be able to answer at the bedside.

The text takes each body system in turn — skeleton and muscle, circulation, respiration, digestion, excretion, reproduction and the nervous system — pairing the descriptive anatomy with the physiological reasoning a probationer needs to interpret pulse, temperature, respiration and the elementary signs of organ failure. Diagrams are simplified line drawings of the kind used on hospital teaching boards in the period, with cross-references to the wards rather than the dissecting room.

Issued by Edward Arnold across the same decades as Medicine for Nurses, the volume formed the second pillar of Sears's three-book curriculum set for British hospital schools of nursing. Reprints into the early 1970s indicate continuing adoption by nurse tutors during the long transition from the General Nursing Council syllabus to the Project 2000 reforms.
