About this book
A single-volume textbook of pathology that binds the gross and microscopic changes of disease to their underlying biological mechanisms. First written as a solo work by Sir Robert Muir in 1924 and continuously revised ever since — first by Muir, then by a succession of British pathology editors including D. F. Cappell and J. R. Anderson at mid-century and, under Hodder Arnold, David Levison, Robin Reid, Alistair D. Burt, David J. Harrison and Stewart Fleming. Muir's has been continuously in print for more than seventy-five years and is one of the defining textbooks of British pathology education.
The text is organised in two halves familiar to British pathology teaching: a general section on cell injury, inflammation, immunology and neoplasia, followed by systemic chapters on the organ systems in turn. Each Hodder Arnold edition has carried the imprint's house style of integrated colour photomicrographs and clinico-pathological correlation, refreshed against the curriculum of the MBChB and the early years of the MRCPath.
Its editorial line has tracked the academic geography of British pathology — from Muir's Glasgow chair through the post-war Cappell and Anderson revisions, into the Dundee and Edinburgh editorial centre that produced the fourteenth edition in 2008.
