The text moves through the major tumour groups of the brain and spinal cord — the diffuse and circumscribed gliomas, the meningothelial and mesenchymal tumours of the meninges, the embryonal and pineal tumours of childhood, the cranial-nerve and pituitary lesions, the lymphomas, and the metastatic deposits — set against the imaging correlates and the working differential diagnosis of the surgical specimen. Coverage is pitched at the level of a consultant pathologist signing out a CNS biopsy and at neurosurgical and neuro-oncology trainees consolidating the histological framework that underpins their practice.

The author team is drawn from Duke University's Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center: Darell D. Bigner as founding director, Roger E. McLendon as Chief of Neuropathology, Sandra Bigner on the cytogenetics and molecular biology side, and James Provenzale supplying the neuroimaging perspective. The volume sits in the Arnold neuropathology line that descends from the Russell and Rubinstein Pathology of Tumors of the Nervous System tradition.
