Emergency Medicine

About this book

A case-led reference covering resuscitation, common ED presentations, and the procedural repertoire of the modern emergency department.

Written in a presentation-led format aligned with Australasian and UK emergency-medicine curricula, the volume groups material around the working categories of the resuscitation room and majors area: airway and shock, the unconscious patient, anaphylaxis, the cardiac and respiratory presentations, acute abdomen, neurological and psychiatric emergencies, toxicology, paediatric and obstetric presentations, and the trauma team's first hour. Practical-procedure chapters cover the airway, vascular access, chest drainage and the orthopaedic reductions a junior is expected to perform under supervision.

Mike Cadogan read arts at Oxford and medicine at Edinburgh, trained in orthopaedics before switching to emergency medicine in Brisbane and now consults at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Perth. He is the co-founder of the open-access emergency-medicine site Life in the Fast Lane, and the bedside-teaching ethos of that site carried into successive editions of the Hodder Arnold and later Routledge text — a working bullet-point handbook rather than a discursive reference.
