Nephrology in Clinical Practice

About this book

A syndrome-led pocket reference for nephrologists and senior medical trainees — part of Arnold's Clinical Practice Series of concise, consultant-level working guides.

The text is organised around presenting renal syndromes — proteinuria, the nephrotic syndrome, acute renal failure, the chronic kidney disease pathway, hypertension, urinary-tract infection and stone disease — rather than disease taxonomy, with management recommendations pitched at the level of a renal-unit registrar working up a new admission. Background chapters cover renal physiology, urinalysis, and the interpretation of imaging and biopsy reports as they are used in the clinical decision rather than in the laboratory.

The author, Sir Graeme Catto, taught and practised in Aberdeen and Guy's and went on to chair the General Medical Council; the volume distils the bedside reasoning of a transplant immunologist and renal physician for the level immediately below consultant. Arnold's Clinical Practice Series sat in the late-1980s catalogue as a parallel to its bigger reference works, supplying ward-pocket volumes against the standing tradition of multi-volume nephrology handbooks.
