Civil Jet Aircraft Design

About this book

A textbook on the conceptual and preliminary design of civil jet transport aircraft — mission analysis, aerodynamic sizing, engine selection, structural layout, and cost estimation. Appendices of representative aircraft data have been cited widely in aerospace teaching.

The text moves through the conceptual-design sequence as it would be taught on a final-year aircraft-design course: payload-range and mission analysis, aerodynamic sizing of wing area and span, propulsion-airframe integration, fuselage layout, structural arrangement and landing-gear placement, weight estimation and balance, performance to airworthiness requirements, and direct-operating-cost estimation. Appendices tabulate representative parameters for civil-jet types in service.

The authorship combines academic and industry experience. Lloyd R. Jenkinson trained at Blackburn Aircraft and Cranfield, took a PhD at Loughborough and taught aircraft design there and at Southampton; Paul Simpkin retired in 1994 as Head of Engine and Aircraft Evaluation at Rolls-Royce; Darren Rhodes contributed performance and environmental modelling from his analyst role at NATS.
