About this book
Cecil Helman's defining text in medical anthropology. Argues that illness is never purely biological — that every encounter between patient and clinician is cultural as well as physiological — and gives clinicians the conceptual tools to work across cultural boundaries. Carried through multiple editions under Hodder Arnold.
First issued in 1984, the volume introduced into clinical training the analytic distinction between disease as biological dysfunction and illness as the patient's lived experience of it, working out the implications across diet and the body, ritual and life-cycle events, mental health, pain, family structure, and the global circulation of pharmaceuticals. Each chapter combines anthropological reading with case material drawn from Helman's twenty-seven years in North London general practice.
Helman trained in Cape Town, took a postgraduate diploma in social anthropology at UCL and split his university career between UCL and Brunel. Successive Hodder Arnold editions have updated the anthropological reading without disturbing the working framework, and the volume sits as a standing reference on medical-school anthropology reading lists.
