An Introduction to Applied Linguistics

About this book

Edward Arnold's graduate-level survey of applied linguistics — language teaching methodology, second-language acquisition, language testing, classroom discourse, and language policy. Published in the firm's applied-linguistics list alongside the journal Language Testing.

The volume runs across the working areas of the discipline: the description of language and language use, the core teaching and learning topics of vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and discourse, the empirical concerns of second-language acquisition, the principles of language testing and assessment, classroom and corpus methodology, and the policy questions of bilingualism and language planning. Each chapter is written by a specialist and pitched at the level of an MA TESOL course.

Norbert Schmitt is Emeritus Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Nottingham, where his doctorate under Michael McCarthy began a research programme on second-language vocabulary acquisition, formulaic language and language testing. Successive editions have been carried forward under Routledge into the 2020s.
