Academic Journals Program
The journals program grew alongside the book list rather than apart from it. Where a textbook established a subject on the Arnold list, a periodical typically followed — the same commissioning editors knew the field, the same authors were already writing, and the readership the books reached overlapped almost completely with the readership a journal in the same area needed. At its peak the programme carried titles across clinical medicine and the allied health professions, applied science and quantitative methods, and the literary and historical humanities, with editorial offices in London, Sevenoaks, and (for the medical list) a network of hospital-based associate editors across the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Each title operated under double-blind peer review with editorial boards drawn from the relevant clinical, academic, or professional community. Submissions were handled by a named editor-in-chief rather than a rotating board chair, which kept the editorial voice of each journal recognisable from year to year — a model the medical titles in particular maintained continuously from launch through to the transfer of the programme to SAGE Publications in 2006. The biographical and editorial history pages linked from each title’s individual record below give the line of editors-in-chief and, where we hold them, the founding editorial statements.
The catalogue below lists the journals whose individual records we have re-published on this site — the ones with substantive ongoing reference value to readers and librarians. Many of the journals continued under SAGE after the 2006 transfer and are still published today; the Arnold pages here focus on the editorial history and the published volumes that fall within the Arnold imprint years. Historical volume enquiries, ISSN confirmations, and back-issue availability questions go through the address at the bottom of this page.
The programme
At its peak, 33 peer-reviewed titles.
In 2006 Hodder Arnold sold its complete academic journals list — 33 peer-reviewed titles — to SAGE Publications. Most continued publication under SAGE with their existing editors. A smaller number ceased around or after the transfer.
